The Monster That Challenged the World (1957) goes way back for me. I may have seen it on Not Quite Classic Theatre, I’m not sure. But I definitely saw it on TV when I was young.
It’s about an earthquake that releases a bunch of giant mollusks from the bottom of the Salton Sea. I guess they’re pretty hungry after a hundred years of hibernation, because they start eating people left, right and centre. Scientists and soldiers from the nearby military base must do everything they can to stop these beasts before they eat everyone on the planet… or something like that.
The Monster That Challenged the World (1957) is full of classic giant monster movie madness – and it is a delight to watch. The special effects were pretty impressive for their time – and still hold up pretty well. More importantly, the characters are actually sympathetic and more believable than the characters in many other, similar movies. It feels like there could have been some good straight up drama going on, if is wasn’t for the interruption of the giant monsters. And that’s always a good thing in my opinion.
The Monster That Challenged the World (1957) is not the best of the 1950s giant monster movies. It’s certainly not remembered as fondly as many of the other movies. I don’t think it was a particular favourite of mine when I was young. But watching it now, as a a jaded, old B-movie fan, I felt like it couldn’t have been a more perfect addition to my #FridayNightAtTheHomeDriveIn. I was surprised by how much I liked it, to be honest. But that the great thing about #NotQuiteClassicCinema. You never know when a “bad”movie might turn out to be pretty good.
