Voodoo Island (1957) is not one of Boris Karloff’s best – or best known – movies. On the other hand, it’s not his worst, either. Karloff plays a bit of an Amazing Randi type; a guy named Phillip Knight who debunks hoaxes. He’s hired by a businessman who’s planning to build a new resort on an island that is rumoured to be a hotbed of voodoo and other supernatural activities. Karloff agrees to check then place out – but says “When I take hold of something, I don’t let go.”

In other words, Phillip Knight believes that the businessman wants to promote his resort with tales of voodoo curses, etc., and Knight’s investigation may spoil his plans. Because he always (so far) has proven such things to be hoaxes.

But as anyone who’s ever seen a movie that starts like this can probably guess, things aren’t going to go quite as smoothly as Knight thinks.

Voodoo Island (1957) is a fun movie with lots of zany action – like the “woman-eating cobra plants” that the poster promises. I don’t think that the plants really choose to eat women over men, but it does so happen to be a woman that we witness falling victim to one of the leafy monsters.

Voodoo Island (1957) could never compete with movies like The Bride of Frankenstein (1935) or The Body Snatcher (1945), but it doesn’t really pretend to be more than what it is: a fun, silly, far-fetched piece of #NotQuiteClassicCinema that might best be enjoyed on a dark and stormy #FridayNightAtTheHomeDriveIn.
